International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater.
The 2009 theme is Shared Water - Shared Opportunities. It focuses on transboundary waters - water that cross borders and link us together.
To celebrate World Water Day make a PlaceStory about water in your region. It could be your local creek, river, catchment or even your watertank. Be creative. If you want more details on how to make a PlaceStory or where to publish it email: World Water Day PlaceStory. All published stories will be forwarded to the United Nations special adviser on water, Ms Maude Barlow.
At the time of writing there is no details for Australian events for this day. For more information check out the UN Water website.
